Low-caf coffee: Laurina and Aramosa explained

Naturally low-caffeine coffee is not decaf. Laurina runs around 0.6% caffeine and Aramosa around 0.7–0.8%, against roughly 1.2% for standard arabica — what that means in the cup, and why you can barely buy either.

There is a category between full-caffeine coffee and decaf that almost nobody sells and almost nobody writes about: coffee that is naturally low in caffeine because of what it is, not because of what was done to it.

It is worth understanding for two reasons. It is the most interesting corner of coffee genetics right now. And it is routinely mis-sold as a decaf substitute, which it is not.

Read that table before buying anything. Laurina is roughly half the caffeine of ordinary coffee. Decaf is roughly a hundredth. If you are moderating, half is useful. If you are avoiding caffeine for a medical reason, half is not decaf and should not be treated as decaf.

Laurina (Bourbon Pointu)

A natural mutation of Bourbon, not a hybrid — genetically near-identical to its parent. It was noticed on Île Bourbon, now Réunion, around 1810, went nearly extinct across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and was revived from 2002 after a surviving tree was traced. It is now also grown in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Brazil.

The name comes from the bean: tapered to a point, pointu. The same mutation is pleiotropic and also produces a dwarf, conical, Christmas-tree-shaped plant, via shortened internodes rather than fewer of them.

On caffeine, be careful with the range. The best measurement is peer-reviewed — Baumann, Sondahl, Waldhauser and Kretschmar (1998) in Phytochemistry — and it found variation from 0.36 to 1.08%, with means of 0.56–0.61% in somaclones and 0.68–0.71% in the parent line. The trade figure of “0.4–0.75%, typically around 0.6%” is a fair typical range, but individual lots can approach ordinary arabica levels. Do not say “always half”.

Why you can barely buy it: the yield is terrible and the plant is fragile. One producer told Perfect Daily Grind that “every time we plant a new field of Laurina, around 30% of the plants die in the first year”, and it grows more slowly than other arabicas. Caffeine is a natural insecticide, so a plant that makes less of it is more pest-vulnerable — the trait that makes it interesting is the same trait that makes it hard to farm. Réunion’s Maison du Laurina produces around 1.5 tonnes a year at roughly €600 per kilo.

It is not in the World Coffee Research variety catalog, so there is no independent agronomic scorecard to consult.

In the cup, expect low acidity, high sweetness and a light body — it drinks delicate rather than intense. It is worth trying once at least, because it tastes unlike anything else, but it is not a workhorse coffee.

Aramosa

A deliberate cross between Coffea arabica and Coffea racemosa, bred at the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC) in Brazil. Daterra describe the intent directly: to inherit racemosa’s low caffeine and drought resistance alongside arabica’s flavour. Worth noting that the peer-reviewed literature describes the original arabica × racemosa breeding objective as coffee leaf miner resistance, with the low-caffeine angle as a later framing — and that the occasional roaster blog calling Aramosa a “natural hybrid” is wrong; it is a deliberate cross.

Caffeine 0.7–0.8% is what the trade reports, and it is chemically plausible given that C. racemosa is measured at 0.73% against arabica’s 0.8–1.6%. But I could find no peer-reviewed measurement of Aramosa itself, so treat the number as trade-sourced rather than established.

It is still a pre-cultivar. Daterra say so themselves: the genetics remain under study with IAC, and there is no commercial release. That is the constraint on supply.

One correction to a claim you will see repeated, including in my own earlier notes: Daterra is not the only commercial source. Fazendas Dutra in Minas Gerais grows and retails an organic Aramosa, and Fórum del Café names both Dutra and Daterra as the pioneer farms. Daterra is the best-known and most widely exported source, with its own exclusive selections. It is not the only one.

The drought-resistance claim is real as breeding intent and as a parent-species trait — C. racemosa grows in a range averaging 807 mm annual rainfall against 1,614 mm for arabica, with 100-day dry spells, and an unusually short 60–120 day flower-to-fruit cycle. Whether Aramosa itself inherits it to a measurable degree has not, as far as I can find, been published. Aramosa also has its own drawbacks: hard to propagate, wants high altitude, and per Fórum del Café is more susceptible to pests and disease.

The two that are more interesting than either

The IAC “AC” mutants are the real story here and almost nobody writes about them. Silvarolla, Mazzafera and Fazuoli published “A naturally decaffeinated arabica coffee” in Nature in 2004: Ethiopian arabica accessions carrying 0.07% caffeine against ~1.2% in common coffee, caused by a caffeine-synthase expression defect. At the time they projected five to six years of field testing and up to fifteen years to move the trait into productive commercial arabicas. Twenty-two years on, still not released. If it ever is, it ends the decaffeination industry for a large slice of the market.

Coffea charrieriana, described from Cameroon in 2008, is genuinely caffeine-free — the seeds make theobromine instead. It is under development in Brazil under the name “Decaffito”. There is no product.

Buying low-caf in Europe

Thin on the ground, and lot-dependent:

  • Decaf Before Death (UK) stock a named Laurina, which is close to unique in Europe. UK shipping only.
  • D Stands For (Vienna) carry a low-caf Typica alongside their decafs.
  • Calm Coffee Roastery (London) run a standing low-caf collection as one rung of their full-caf / half-caf / low-caf / decaf ladder, and ship to Ireland, Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
  • Les Révélations (France) reference a 0.6% caffeine tier in their FAQ without naming varieties.

Treat every low-caf claim as needing per-lot verification. Because the category is unregulated and the varieties are rare, “low caf” on a bag means whatever the seller wants it to mean unless a variety and a figure are stated.

Questions

Is Laurina coffee decaf?
No. Laurina typically measures around 0.6% caffeine by dry weight against roughly 1.2% for standard arabica — about half, not the 99% reduction a decaffeination process achieves. A cup of Laurina carries far more caffeine than a cup of decaf.
What is Aramosa coffee?
A deliberate cross between Coffea arabica and Coffea racemosa, bred at the Agronomic Institute of Campinas in Brazil. Trade sources put it at 0.7–0.8% caffeine. It is still a pre-cultivar — the genetics have not been stabilised and released — so supply is limited to a couple of Brazilian farms.

    Does not say Half is not decaf. A cup of Laurina carries far more caffeine than a cup of decaffeinated coffee, and describing Laurina as a decaf alternative for caffeine-sensitive drinkers is a meaningful error.

    Does not say It does not describe a commercially available coffee. Two decades on, these plants have not produced a bag you can buy, and citing the paper as if they had is the standard misuse.
